Computing hardware needs to create optimal environmental conditions to work stably and smoothly. The optimal temperature range within a server rack is between 68° and 72° F. Several techniques are used to ensure this temperature is maintained:
Keep hot and cold air separate. The air in the server room is divided into two main channels. Server rack distribution that takes into account this air profile allows for better cooling using natural airflow.
Use special server accessories. Blanking plates are used to keep unused slots closed. It is important to achieve a closed loop of air circulation within the closed cabinet to maintain compliance with the set conditions. Outside air can enter the rack body through slots and cable holes. If they're not in use, sysadmins tend to stuff them with blank panels.
Install the rack fan. The rack body has holes for installing fans. They help direct airflow and maintain optimal temperatures within the cabinet. Here, at least 2 fans must be installed to force the air to circulate properly.
Door perforations. Air can penetrate the perforated door and cool the device.
Maintaining the right temperature is an essential task in a server room to protect hardware from overheating and keep it running smoothly for a long time.
humidity
Rising or falling humidity can cause rust, condensation, or corrosion on circuit boards. If the air in the room is too dry, static electricity tends to build up on the board. The least desirable consequence is an internal short circuit in the hardware.
To prevent such problems, system administrators should maintain humidity levels between 45% and 55%. Special monitoring sensors are installed to control humidity indicators. You can set up alerts that will be sent to the management computer.
vibration
The continued impact of additional vibration from the outside can cause critical system components to shift and interfere with the hard drive. For example, large machinery or overcrowded areas in a production facility can be a source of increased vibration.
Therefore, it is important to take the issue of choosing the right location for rack installation seriously. Prioritize areas that are not crowded and make sure no large machinery is placed nearby.
water
Computing devices are sensitive to moisture. Water can severely damage active equipment and circuit boards, causing system downtime. Therefore, network equipment must be protected from possible contact with water. In this case, the best solution is to arrange the server room without plumbing. If the pipes run through the room, there is a risk of pipe bursts and flooding.
